Externship Description

The extern will assist members of the consulting team with developing internal and external resources and perspectives on emerging fields of the biopharma industry based upon existing frameworks. This may include assessments of the opportunity for novel products within specific disease spaces, insight development from information published during medical conferences, and/or support for due diligence of potential deals between biopharma companies. The extern should have a strong grasp of the science underlying the leading edge of clinical product development, the ability to utilize secondary research tools (including public and proprietary databases) to characterize drugs, deals, and markets, and the ability to succinctly synthesize information into high-impact outputs.

Specific Objectives

Depending on alignment with skills and interest, the extern will assemble fact bases and/or forward-looking perspectives on key therapeutic modalities and/or disease states of interest. This work may include:

  • Reading scientific literature to identify meaningful insights into therapies in development, as well as to describe unique mechanisms of action clearly to a scientifically informed but nontechnical audience
  • Conducting secondary research and deploying standard industry tools to identify relevant companies, technologies, deal activity, and pipelines of products in development
  • Identifying and fleshing out current and future trends in the area of interest, which will involve both understanding the current state of the market as well as projecting how current developments will be practically deployed in the future • Writing reports and/or PowerPoint presentations that synthesize this information for use in informing internal teams as well as external prospects

Qualifications

  • Current graduate student or postdoctoral trainee
  • PhDs and/or candidates within ~1 year of program completion preferred
  • Ideal candidate will have a disciplinary background in molecular biology, biochemistry and biophysics, genetics, cancer biology, immunology, or related fields
  • Baseline technical skills include facility with Microsoft Office tools including PowerPoint and Excel
  • Resourcefulness in identifying questions and finding answers
  • Ability to recognize what is important and prioritize accordingly
  • Ability to compile and distill complex information into discrete learnings
  • Structured thinking to elucidate insights to address key questions
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and timely manner
  • Ability to understand broader market context and identify points of connectivity through the biopharmaceutical industry
  • While the externship is unpaid, all applicants must be currently eligible for employment in the United States
