Orange Grove Bio Fellows Program

Mentor

Brittney Fitzgerald Associate Director, Orange Grove Bio

Background

Founded by Marc Appel (ex-McKinsey and Marathon), Orange Grove Bio (“OGB”) is a drug venture and development company. OGB has partnered with some of the country’s best research universities to drive down the cost of pre-clinical drug development and bring to patients more transformational medicines in autoimmune, inflammatory diseases, and oncology.

The Orange Grove Bio Fellows Program is a year-long unpaid remote internship program offered to university doctoral students (and some masters students and post docs) that gives them substantive training in early-stage biotech diligence and operations. The most promising candidates from the Fellows Program are eligible for full-time hire into Orange Grove upon completion of the program. The internship emphasizes soft skill building, such as leadership and project management, in addition to gaining an understanding of the biotech industry. The Fellows are actively involved in core projects, including due diligence, market analysis, presentations, and operating plans at portfolio companies.

Externship Description

The goal of the Program is to introduce life science diligence and operations to students through a full immersion program that gives them a substantial and unfiltered experience. It is an important way that Orange Grove Bio helps partner with universities to strengthen their life science ecosystem that directly benefits the educational prerogatives of the University.

Program Design

  • ~1-3 students will be selected from the partner university for the Program.
  • The Program will run for a calendar year (12 months).
  • Typically, students commit 5-10 hours a week for a substantial educational experience with flexible timing.
  • Students work directly with the firm’s senior management, who are life sciences industry veterans with stellar track records of success and decades of experience.
  • Students will be assigned to a diligence team to vet early-stage projects and run deeper diligence exercises on select projects under the guidance of an experienced mentor.
  • Students are taught the Orange Grove Bio “funnel” methodology of due diligence and gain experience in various analytical methods/tools commonly used in the life sciences business. Students are frequently asked to present their work at team meetings.
  • Students will also be assigned to work as part of the team on a portfolio company to learn more about biotech company operations.
  • Numerous optional biotech educational experiences such as attending virtual presentations and conferences, participate in Lunch & Learn Seminars with speakers on a range of relevant topics, or joining management team for meetings with other companies to learn about advancements across the industry.
  • Opportunity to network, collaborate and share knowledge with other Fellows from leading research institutions through bi-monthly meetings.
