Background

The Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics (MScBMI) is a relatively new graduate degree program offered by the Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. Faculty from the Biological Sciences Division oversee the curriculum content and serve as instructors in the program. There are currently approximately fifty part-time and and full-time students in the program. The degree requires successful completion of nine courses and a capstone project, taking place at nights and on weekends, usually over two years.

Internship Description

This internship is designed to introduce PhD candidates and postdoctoral scholars to graduate education program development and management. The MScBMI is a relatively new program and has just completed the first year of coursework and capstone projects. We are looking for an intern to lead, under the mentors’ guidance, an in-depth review of the curriculum.

Specific Objectives

  • Understand the new, recently-released accreditation standards.

  • Review the current MScBMI curriculum and individual courses’ content.

  • Assess how the MScBMI curriculum aligns with the new standards and where there are gaps.

  • If time, investigate other universities’ programs and make recommendations for potential changes to the curriculum.

Qualifications

  • Currently graduate student or postdoctoral trainee at the University of Chicago

  • Previous graduate education, biomedical informatics, or health sciences experience

  • Ability to work independently but also ask for guidance when needed

  • Able to attend weekly meetings on the UChicago campus and/or at the Gleacher Center downtown location

  • Excellent research, written and oral communication, and time management skills
