Conducting Research in Chemical Companies

Monday, November 8, 2021, 5:30 – 6:30 PM CST

Interested in pursuing industry research after your PhD? Join our panel this week to learn more about conducting research in large chemical companies. Our panelists (representing Dow, PPG, and Corteva) will discuss their transition from academia to industry, the recruiting/interview process, work/life balance, the different positions that exist, career mobility, and more. If you have specific questions/topics you would like to see included in the discussion, email ehakimmoully@bsdu.uchicago.edu.

Endre (Andy) Szuromi, PhD

Research Scientist, Dow, Inc.

Andy is a research scientist and technical leader in the Catalyst Scale-up group within the Packaging & Specialty Plastics and Hydrocarbons R&D (P&SPH) division at Dow.  He joined the company in late 2007 and worked in several business R&D departments (Hydrocarbons, Epoxy and Oil, Gas & Mining) as part of the Research Assignments Program before joining Core R&D, where his work focused on the development of a number of early-stage projects directed at novel polymer architectures and new catalyst systems for olefin polymerization.  Andy joined P&SPH business R&D in 2018, where he currently leads the technical part of catalyst scale-up to support polyolefin development projects closer to commercialization. Andy was born and raised in Hungary.  After receiving his MS degree in chemistry from the University of Debrecen, Hungary, he came to the US to join the PhD program of the University of Missouri – Columbia.  He studied the chemistry of Pt(II) oxo-complexes in Paul Sharp’s group.  After obtaining his PhD, he explored palladium-catalyzed olefin polymerizations as a postdoctoral fellow in the research group of Richard Jordan at the University of Chicago.  Andy co-authored 9 publications and is an inventor on 12 granted patents as well as 10 patent applications.

Rachel Harris, PhD

Senior Color Science Researcher, PPG

Dr. Rachel Harris received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Northwestern University in 2017, and began her career at PPG that same year in the Substrate Protection group as a formulator for metal surface treatments. In 2019, Rachel moved to PPG’s Optical Physics group to take a new role as a Senior Color Science Researcher, where she is currently leading projects in digital color rendering and light-matter interactions of coatings. She has been recognized by the Manufacturing Institute as a 2021 STEP Ahead Emerging Leader.

Weiwei Wang, PhD

Senor Chemist, Corteva Agriscience

Weiwei received her PhD in Organic Chemistry from Northwestern University after completing her undergraduate studies at Kalamazoo College. She has been working as a Senior Chemist within Discovery Chemistry at Corteva Agriscience (formerly Dow AgroSciences) since 2018. In her current role, she researches and develops the active ingredient of a next generation fungicide that targets a detrimental cereal disease around the world. Weiwei has been actively involved in campus recruiting as well as promoting women in science. She recently started the Midwest chapter of EWOC (Empowering Women in Organic Chemistry) with a group of chemists.
