Material Scientists in Industry Research

Monday, November 23rd, 5:30-6:30 PM CST

This week’s What can I do with my PhD? career seminar will feature three material scientists from 3M and Intel. They will share their experiences of doing material research and development in the corporate environment and provide advice to scientists who are interested in this career path.

Moshe Dolejsi

Integration Engineer, Intel Corporation

Moshe Dolejsi (He/Him) received his undergrad degree at North Carolina State University in chemical engineering, and then came to UChicago where he worked under Professor Paul Nealey on Directed Self-Assembly of Block Copolymers. After racking up a very impressive bill at both MRSEC and the PNF he defended his thesis in Summer 2019. Post defence he joined Intel starting in Logic Technology Development as a Yield Engineer and has since moved over to Integration. He enjoys the weathers, the hills, and the trees of Oregon while still being snow adjacent (Mt. Hood just an hour away for skiing). He has two very spoiled cats and a backlog of too many video games to ever possibly finish.

Caroline Ylitalo

Division Scientist, 3M

Caroline Ylitalo is a division scientist at 3M Company.  She holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University. Throughout her career, Ylitalo has focused on developing new technologies and has over 100 issued and pending patents, including inks and films for digitally printed graphics and traffic signs, antimicrobial wound dressings, respirator for healthcare, and functional coatings for safety eyewear and shields.

Since joining 3M in 1992, Ylitalo has always been an active participant and volunteer in various science encouragement organizations including the 3M Visiting Wizards program, judging at local and state science fairs, and coaching science and math academic teams. Ylitalo is a founding member of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge program and served on the 3M Foundation Health and Human Services advisory board. She is the president of SOAR (Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief) Minneapolis Chapter and serves on the Twin Cities Regional Science fair scientific review committee. Ylitalo was born and raised in Syria. She immigrated to the United States as an adult. She is fluent in Arabic, Armenian, and French, she plays the piano and enjoys singing in her church choir.

Jeffrey Ting

Senior Polymer Scientist, 3M

Jeff Ting (he/him) received his BS in Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2016, working with Frank Bates and Theresa Reineke on synthesizing tunable polymers for oral drug delivery. Afterward, Jeff worked as a NIST-CHiMaD Postdoctoral Fellow in Matt Tirrell’s group at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, as part of the Center for Hierarchical Materials Design (CHiMaD) supported by NIST and the Materials Genome Initiative. He recently started as a Senior Polymer Scientist at 3M in Minneapolis. Minnesota in July; his current projects are part of the Materials Informatics platform in the Corporate Research Materials Laboratory. Outside of work, Jeff enjoys running (marathon training in non-pandemic times), STEM outreach/engagement, and baking.
