Bench to Big Picture: Research Management in Academia & Industry

Monday, October 19th, 5:30-6:30 PM CST

At this installment of the “What can I do with my PhD?” career seminar series we’ll welcome three scientists who chose to put aside the nitty gritty disciplinary details in order to engage in a wide variety of research projects on a broader scale, to identify and process research opportunities, and align stakeholders around critical issues. They will share their career journeys, the functions that they play in their respective institutions, and what they appreciate about working in research management.

Kate Timmerman

Executive Director, Chicago Quantum Exchange

Kate Timmerman is the executive director of the Chicago Quantum Exchange, a catalyst for advancing academic and industrial efforts in the science and engineering of quantum information. The Exchange is a collaboration between the University of Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Northwestern University and industry partners. With the Exchange, Kate fosters emerging research partnerships between academia, national labs, and industry. Kate is currently a board member for P33, the private sector initiative to promote Chicago’s standing as a technology center and ARCS Illinois, which supports Illinois graduate scholars by providing financial awards in science, engineering and medical research. Kate received her Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of California, Davis and her bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College.

Shann Yu

Scientific Director of the Immunoengineering Innovation Center, UChicago PME

Dr. Yu is the founding Scientific Director of the Chicago Immunoengineering Innovation Center (CIIC) at the Pritzker School for Molecular Engineering. He manages large multi-PI grantwriting efforts, develops new core facilities (and develops sustainable funding streams for them), creates new external partnership structures (sponsored research agreements and investment in spinoff companies), manages the website and social media for CIIC, and creates new training programs at the PhD and postdoc levels. Dr. Yu coordinates across multiple university departments in order to achieve these goals.

Shann Yu earned a BS in Bioengineering from Rice University, followed by a masters degree PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Lu performed his postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Prof. Melody Swartz at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, and continued after the lab’s relocation to UChicago.
