Bootstrapping from Bench Biologist to Applied Data Scientist

Monday, November 16th, 5:30-6:30 PM CST

This week’s What can I do with my PhD? career seminar will feature three recent alumni working as applied data scientists in the commercial environment. Each of them went through a period of transition in graduate school during which they actively pursued coding skills that were not a part of their graduate school research skillset. They will share their stories, their parsing of the broad field of data science, and how you can prepare yourself to make a similar shift.

Kayla Robinson

Data Scientist, American Family Insurance

After earning her PhD in Medical Physics from the University of Chicago, Dr. Robinson entered the data science industry to apply the machine learning skills developed in graduate school to applications in business. She is currently a data scientist at Civis Analytics.

Corey Smith

Data Scientist of Decision Sciences Team, Conversant

Alyssa Harker Rodriguez

Data Scientist, The J.M. Smucker Company

Dr. Rodriguez earned her doctorate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from the University of Chicago. During her doctoral training she investigated the dynamics of actin binding proteins in David Kovar’s lab. Dr. Rodriguez started a career in data science to problem solve and apply data-driven solutions to a wide-range of business questions. She is currently a data scientist at the J.M. Smucker Co.
