The Business of Running a Research Group: PME & PSD

Our annual mini-course designed for future faculty!

This mini-course will address some of your most pressing concerns as you consider the practical aspects of starting your own lab. Each of the four 90-minute sessions will be a moderated panel discussion, structured around questions that each panelist will answer. This mini-course is highly appropriate for late-stage grad students and postdocs who are nearing the academic job market.

Session Content

Session 1: Negotiating and budgeting your start-up package
Once the job offer has been extended, the prospective faculty member must develop a realistic budget and might be judging multiple offers. What critical considerations should be made before accepting an offer?

Session 2: Time management, planning, and staffing your research group
The new PI immediately faces personal, professional, and scientific challenges that were not part of their formal research training. How should the earliest months be navigated?

Session 3: Grant writing, submission, and management
Many postdocs have not been involved in the grant application process or have limited knowledge of funding sources. How can they creatively fund their early years of research? UChicago Office of Research Administration will be present at this session to represent the typical pre- and post-award role of this office in the application process.

Session 4: Lab management, culture, and mentorship
Most entering faculty will have limited experience in group management. This session will explore guiding principles of group management, how (and why) to foster a lab culture, strategies for conflict resolution, and the signs that it’s time to fire an employee or release a graduate student.
