About Us

The Center for Translational Data Science at the University of Chicago is developing the discipline of data science and its applications to problems in biology, medicine, healthcare and the environment. We develop and operate large scale data platforms to support research in topics of societal interest including cancer, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), birth defects, veterans’ health, pain management, opioid use disorder, and environmental science. We also develop new machine learning and AI algorithms over the data in our platforms.

Externship Background

The Medical Imaging and Data Resource Center (MIDRC) is an ambitious effort funded by the NIH that will harness the powers of artificial intelligence, and medical imaging to fight COVID-19. The public access “front door” of MIDRC is hosted by the state-of-the art Gen3 Data Ecosystem under leadership of Robert Grossman, PhD, and housed at the University of Chicago.

Externship Objectives

  • Become familiar with the Gen3 ecosystem and the software architecture used at MIDRC to support large–scale computations
  • Understand the Agile methodology MIDRC has been using for software development
  • Understand the data management tool hosted on AWS and how the infrastructure delivers resources that MIDRC Gen3 needs
  • Contribute to the MIDRC feature development, such as the containerized functionality workflow, DICOM viewer integration, RabbitMQ integration, ETL, etc.
  • Prepare for the work environment in the student’s career: coordinate with team members, report at standups, participate in retro and planning meetings, participate in timeline and milestone planning, etc.

Your application must include a current CV and a cover letter describing why this internship is relevant to your career goals.
