Internship Description

The Chicago Council on Science and Technology’s mission is to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of science and technology and their impact on society. Digital engagement is the newest arm of our public outreach strategy where we aim to build online science communities and a means for free widespread STEM education.

This internship is designed to give hands-on experience to Ph.D. candidates and postdoctoral scholars in science communication in the digital space. The Intern will work individually and in a team setting under the guidance of C2ST staff. The Intern will research and develop written content for our online platforms, as well as edit and produce audio and visual content such as podcasts, YouTube videos, and blog and Instagram posts. The Intern will also learn how this content contributes to an overall digital marketing plan and will get an insight into how nonprofits operate. By the end of the internship, the intern will be able to add several published digital pieces, such as blogs, videos, and curated social media posts to their portfolio.

Qualifications

  • Current graduate student or postdoctoral trainee at the University of Chicago
  • Strong work ethic and interest in learning about effective science communication with the public, digital engagement, and communications strategies
  • Able to commit approximately 8-10 hours per week to independent research and content development
  • Of those 8-10 hours, able to work 4-5 hours per week at the C2ST office (located on the IIT campus in Bronzeville) with the option to work an additional 4-5 hours per week remotely
  • Excellent communication, writing, and time management skills

Responsibilities

  • Research, develop, and publish new content for C2ST’s various digital engagement platforms
  • Optimize scientific content to align with digital marketing strategy and search engine optimization
  • Edit and produce video and audio clips that are engaging, creative, and up to date with current professional standards
