This upcoming session of the What can I do with my PhD? career seminar will feature professionals with backgrounds in engineering, biological, and physical sciences whose facility with scientific writing and desire to explore diverse topics has led them to careers as freelance science journalists. The panelists will share their unique journeys as freelance journalists, their day-to-day tasks and responsibilities, insights into the skillset needed for success in this field, and advice for how you can prepare yourself to make a similar shift.

Max Levy, Ph.D.

Freelance Journalist

Dr. Max G. Levy received a PhD from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 2020. His research in the department of chemical & biological engineering focused on creating nanomaterials that kill multidrug resistant pathogens. He is now a freelance writer and editor, writing for news sites as well as institutional and educational magazines. His stories span from topics related to his PhD research to fields well beyond, from tiny atoms to vast cosmos. Max’s work appears regularly in WIRED Magazine and Quanta Magazine, among other outlets.

Sam Jones, Ph.D.

Freelance Journalist

Sam Jones, Ph.D., is a biomedical scientist turned science journalist based in Washington, DC. In 2018, after completing her graduate work at the University of California San Diego, she began working as an assistant editor at Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN). Shortly after, she started a position as the writer and host of the American Chemical Society/PBS YouTube science series Reactions. At the end of 2021, she began her current role as the executive producer and co-host of the science podcast Tiny Matters. Sam has also been a freelance journalist since 2017, writing for outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Geographic, Scientific American, New Scientist, and Nature. She is the current president of the DC Science Writers Association.

Shi En Kim, Ph.D.

Dr. She En Kim, a Malaysian-born freelance science writer. She earned her PhD in molecular engineering from the University of Chicago in 2022 and holds a B.S. in chemical engineering from Caltech. Dr. Kim covers a wide range of topics, focusing on health, healthcare, and the physical sciences, with a special interest in nanoengineering, physics, and space. Her work has appeared in National Geographic, Scientific American, Hakai Magazine, Slate, Science News, Science News for Students, and more. Dr. Kim was a AAAS Mass Media Fellow at Smithsonian Magazine, an editor for Massive Science, and a life sciences reporter at Chemical & Engineering News.
